The Cytology of Some Species of the Genus Notholaena

Abstract: Eight taxa in the genus Notholaena were examined for their chromosome numbers; one of the eight had two cytotypes (2 N, 4 N). The other seven consisted of five triploids and two diploids. Observations were also included on spore number and prothallial glandularity whenever possible.

“…First counts for N. neglecta revealed that it encompasses two ploidy levels; a sexual diploid cytotype with n ϭ 30 and an apogamous triploid with n ϭ 2n ϭ 90. Our study also corroborated earlier counts for N. copelandii and N. greggii (Benham and Schaack, 1988), N. galeottii and N. rigida (Knobloch et al, 1973), and N. trichomanoides var. subnuda (as forma subnuda in Walker, 1973).…”

“…This species appears closely related to the more northern taxa C. parryi and C. lanosa, and all three share a diploid chromosome number of n ϭ 30. The data presented in Table 1 also corroborate earlier published counts for C. bonariensis (as Notholaena aurea in Knobloch et al, 1973) andC. newberryi (as N. newberryi in Knobloch, 1967).…”
