The Dark Dimension in a Warped Throat

Ralph Blumenhagen,
Max Brinkmann,
Andriana Makridou

Abstract: By combining swampland conjectures with observational data, it was suggested that our universe should lie in an asymptotic region of the quantum gravity landscape. The generalized distance conjecture for dS, the smallness of the cosmological constant and astrophysical constraints led to a scenario with one mesoscopic large dimension of size ℓ ∼ Λ −1/4 ∼ 10 −6 m. We point out that a strongly warped throat with its redshifted KK tower provides a natural string theoretic mechanism that realizes the scaling m ∼ Λ … Show more

“…Since the KK tower descends from UV in this case, the 4-dimensional EFT description is not reliable. We can find the similar situation in more realistic model like the KKLT or the large volume scenario, in which the uplift potential is generated by D3-branes at the tip of the Klebanov-Strassler throat [22,23]. In this case, the uplift potential and the tower mass scale m satisfy the scaling law m ∼ V α up .…”

“…Since the 4-dimensional cosmological constant Λ 4 is determined by the flux and the uplift as well, we will eventually arrive at the scaling law obeyed by Λ 4 and the KK mass scale. Regarding this, there have been conjectures which try to argue that the tiny value of Λ 4 implies the low tower mass scale [18,19,20,21,22,23]. If it were the case, our universe having Λ 4 ≃ 10 −123 M 4 4 , where M 4 is the 4-dimensional Planck mass, is quite close to the corner of the landscape.…”

“…Pl . As pointed out in [25], V w up depends on V 0 and |z| in the same way as (m w KK ) 4 . More concretely, comparing (32) with (20) we obtain the scaling behavior…”

“…We point out in this article that the antibrane uplift which plays the crucial role in realizing the metastable dS vacuum [23,24] can be easily connected to the distance conjecture. Indeed, it was already observed in [25] that when the throat is strongly warped, both the KK mass scale m KK and the uplift potential V up produced by D3-branes are redshifted in the same way, satisfying the scaling behavior given by m KK ∼ (V up ) 1/4 . As we will see, the exponent 1/4 originates from the fact that D3-branes are extended over the noncompact four-dimensional spacetime, which reminds us of the argument in [12] that the lower bound on α in (1) given by 1/4 is interpreted as the inverse of the number of noncompact spacetime dimensions.…”

“…This seemingly simple model is behind a very rich phenomenology [6,[11][12][13][14]. For example, two dark matter (DM) candidates have been proposed: (i) primordial black holes (PBHs) that were born very early in the life of the universe [12], and (ii) the massive spin-2 KK excitations of the graviton in the dark dimension (dubbed the "dark gravitons") [14].…”
