The Dark Side of Testosterone Deficiency: I. Metabolic Syndrome and Erectile Dysfunction

Abstract: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is considered the most important public health threat of the 21st century. This syndrome is characterized by a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors including increased central abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, reduced high-density lipoprotein, high blood pressure, increased fasting glucose, and hyperinsulinemia. These factors increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and/or type 2 diabetes. Although the etiology of this syndrome is thought to stem from obesity a… Show more

“…OSAS is associated with an increased risk of hypertension, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, stroke, and sudden death. Sexual dysfunction associated with OSAS may also be explained by the metabolic syndrome [175,176]. Men with OSAS have lowered plasma testosterone levels [177] but this association was largely explained by adiposity in agreement with the finding that the metabolic syndrome is associated with reduced plasma testosterone values [178,175].…”

“…Androgen deficiency syndromes and hypogonadism, clinical conditions characterized by a deregulation of sex hormones, are associated with aging, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (Soler et al 1989, Haffner et al 1996, Stellato et al 2000, Oh et al 2002, Farrell et al 2008, Traish et al 2009). We tested the hypothesis that testosterone or E 2 sex hormone treatment plays an important role in metabolism in primary skeletal muscle cells, and that an intrinsic sex difference may become apparent following exogenous sex hormone exposure on metabolism.…”

“…Neither is it a life-style hormone for those men seeking eternal youth. Its deficiency leads to a serious deterioration of the health of men expressing itself in the metabolic syndrome and its sequelae: diabetes mellitus type 2 and atherosclerotic disease accelerating morbidity and mortality (32). Intervention studies in men with diabetes mellitus are limited in number, but hold promise.…”
