The Tianchi volcano in the Changbai Mountains is located on the boundary between China and North Korea. There are many times of eruptions of the Tianchi volcano during the Holocene. One of its large eruptions occurred around 1000 years ago dated by 14 C method and historical records. Composition of products of the largest Tianchi volcanic eruption studied is characterized by comenditic Plinian fallout and unwelded ignimbrite, which are mainly distributed in China and North Korea. Caldera is about 4.4 km long and 3.4 km wide, which had filled with water (e.g. Tianchi Lake). The Tianchi volcanic cone is about 2700 m high above sea level. The Tianchi Lake is located on the summit of the volcanic cone, that is also highest peak of the Changbai Mountains in northeastern China. This study analyzed Cl, F, S and H 2 O concentrations of melt inclusions in the phenocryst minerals (anorthoclase and quartz) and co-existing matrix glasses using the electron microprobe and estimated environmental effect of Tianchi volcanic gases. The authors proposed a new method to evaluate future eruption of active volcano and estimate potential volcanic hazards based on contents of volatile emissions. Using this method, we made a perspective of future volcanic hazard in this region.

Volatiles erupted from large-scale explosive volcanic activities have a significant impact on climate and environmental changes. As an important ecological factor, the occurrence of fire is affected by vegetation cover, and fire can feed back into both vegetation and climatic change. The causes of fire events are diverse; and can include volcanic eruptions. The amount of charcoal in sediment sequences is related to the frequency and intensity of fire, and hence under good preservation conditions fire history can be reconstructed from fossil charcoal abundance. Until now, little research on the role of fire has been carried out in northeastern China. In this study, through research on charcoal and tephra shards from Gushantun and Hanlongwan, Holocene vegetation change in relation to fire and volcanic events in Jilin, Northeastern China, was investigated. Where tephra shards are present in Gushantun it is associated with low level of both conifers and broadleaved trees, and is also associated with a pronounced charcoal peak. This suggests forest cover was greatly reduced from a fire caused by an eruption of the Tianchi volcano. We also detected one tephra layer in Hanlongwan, which also has the almost same depth with low level forest pollen values and one charcoal peak. This was caused probably by an eruption of the Jinlongdingzi volcano. In this study we employed intensive field investigation augmented by remote sensing data to reveal the impacts of past volcanic eruptions on spatial distribution and succession status of forest ecosystems in the Changbai Mountain Natural Reserve (CMNR). We processed the time series Landsat multispectral and IKONOS high spatial resolution imagery data to map forest types and spatial distributions. We obtained slope/aspect/elevation information from SRTM digital elevation model data. The SRTM and derivative topography information provide guidance and reference to differentiate vertical vegetation zones in the core area of the CMNR. We focused more on the spruce-fir forests and the very unique and representative sub-alpine birch (Betula ermanii) forests. The trend of B. ermanii colonizing into tundra zone and the species changes within and between vegetation zones indicate that the forest ecosystems within the CMNR are in different stages of succession after historical volcanic disturbances. Vegetation maps derived from remote sensing data confirmed the variations of forests and help gain insights for understanding the spatial and temporal characteristics of the forest ecosystems and the biodiversity that the ecosystems support in such a unique geographical region.
