The de Morton Mobility Index (DEMMI): An essential health index for an ageing world

Abstract: Background: Existing instruments for measuring mobility are inadequate for accurately assessing older people across the broad spectrum of abilities. Like other indices that monitor critical aspects of health such as blood pressure tests, a mobility test for all older acute medical patients provides essential health data. We have developed and validated an instrument that captures essential information about the mobility status of older acute medical patients.

“…The secondary outcomes were Modified Barthel Index 10 (MBI) as a measure of function, the de Morton Mobility Index (DEMMI) 11 as a measure of mobility, and length of stay. The widely used MBI was developed as a multidimensional measure of a patient's ability to perform activities of daily living.…”

“…20 The de Morton Mobility Index, for example, has recently been proposed as a unidimensional measure of mobility in subacute older inpatients. 21 Yet this instrument does not display results graphically, and its ability to track day-to-day changes has not been investigated. Other widely used measures, such as the Guralnik Physical Performance Test 22 and the Timed Up and Go, 23 have been well validated against adverse outcomes in community-dwelling older people.…”

“…These included the burns specific health scale or BSHS (Blades et al 1982); the modified Iowa level of assistance score or mILOA (Kimmel et al 2016b) and the de Morton Mobility Index (de Morton et al 2008). Time points for administering these measures to trauma patients varied.…”
