The ? decay of the new isotope79Y

Abstract: The neutron deficient isotope 79y has been firstly identified and the decay properties were studied from ]/-decay measurements in the reaction of 54Fe(28Si, p2n) at 92MeV. Three 7 rays of 152.5, 177.4, and 1106 keV were observed concerning the fl decay. The half life and QEC value were determined to be 14.9+0.6 s and 7.12_+0.45 MeV, respectively. The decay scheme including spin-parity is discussed, and 5/2 + assignment for the ground state is proposed.

“…Most of the nuclei populated in these states decay after recoiling out of the center of GASP. A similar reduction in intensity has been found for the case of a known isomeric state in 79 Sr (177 keV, 5 / 2 + , with a lifetime of 20 ns) [14,17], observed with GASP in the reaction 58 Ni+ 24 Mg͑90 MeV͒. It has been assumed that the transitions of 133 and 192 keV feed the 3 / 2 − ground state [20].…”

“…The level scheme of 79 Sr has been previously investigated by heavy-ion reactions, leading to the observation of the three band structures mentioned above [13,14,17]. Data from a previous experiment that we performed with the GASP array and the 58 Ni+ 24 Mg reaction at 90 MeV [18] has made it possible to considerably extend the level scheme.…”

“…"The weighted averages of half lives determined for various γ-rays in the daughter nuclei are t 1/2 = 8.9(3) s, 159(8) s and 14.4(15) s for 76,78 Sr and 79 Y, respectively." This half-life for 79 Y is included in the accepted average value of 14.8(6) s. The observation of 79 Y had previously been reported in a conference proceeding [23] and Mukai et al submitted their independent results only two months later [24]. [27].…”
