The Definition of Block “Success” in the Contemporary Literature

Abstract: A successful nerve block is the common goal that shapes modern regional anesthesia practice and research, yet the meaning of block "success" can be open to interpretation. For this Special Article, we reviewed all applicable randomized controlled trials published over the last decade to determine the most commonly used definitions of block success. We also sought to uncover which relevant indicators of block success are routinely reported in the contemporary literature. Twenty-two trials that explicitly design… Show more

“…The definition of "block success," however, is variable as demonstrated in a recent review. 1 For example, there are few data to suggest that specific acute pain outcomes are improved by US guidance when PNB is successful. 2 The difference, however, may be in block success rates for nonexperts.…”

“…In the adult and pediatric literature, the concept of “success” of a particular interventional procedure has remained vaguely defined. For instance, it is found in no more than 50% of anesthesia trials of regional anesthesia . It is even harder to find a definition of efficacy of the interventional procedures as part of a comprehensive multidimensional pain treatment program.…”
