Serum glycoproteins in diabetes mellitus ; quantitative immunological determination of acid %-glycoprotein, Gc, %-macroglobulin and haemopexin in diabetics with and without angiopathySummary. 1. Serum concentrations of acid ~l-glycoprotein, Gc, ~2-maeroglobulin and haemopexin were determined in diabetics with and without vascular complications by the immunological assay method of MANcr~I and co-workers. --2. %-maeroglobulin concentrations were increased in sere of diabetics. The mean value was 242 mg ~ in 276 patient.s compared with the mean value of 186 rag% in a sample of 98 healthy blood-donors. This difference is statistically highly significant. The increase was more pronounced in juvenile diabetes than in late-onset diabetes. The increase was also more pronounced in patients with retinopathy than in patients without retinopathy. There was also an increase of ~2-macroglobulin concentrations in relation to the degree of arteriosclerotic changes of the peripheral vessels. --3. Serum concentrations of acid el-glycoprotein and Ge were only slightly increased in diabetics compared with blood-donors. --4. There was a small, but statistically highly significant increase of haemopexin concentrations in sere of diabetics. The mean value in 243 diabetics was 92 rag%, in 15 healthy blood-donors a mean value of only 77 mg % was found..Les glycoprotdines du sdrum dans le diab~te sucrd; dosage immunologique quantitatif de Gc,hdmopexine chez des diabdtiques avec et sans angiopathie Rdsumd. 1. L'augmenration est plus prononc6e dens le diab~te juvdnile que dens le diab@te d'apparition plus tardive. L'augmentation est 6galement plus prononc6e chez les patients atteints de r6tinopathie que chez ceux qui en sent exempts. I1 y a aussi une augmentation des concentrations d'%-macroglobuline en rapport avec le degr6 des modifications art6rioseMrotiques des vaisseaux p6riph6riques. --3. “…Although the protein was purified (4) and characterized by physical and chemical methods (5-7) soon after its discovery in 1958 (8), nothing except a partial amino-terminal sequence (9) was published about the structure of hemopexin until our recent reports on the O-glycosyl and N-glycosyl sites and the unusual clustering of tryptophan residues (10,11). We now present the complete primary structure of human hemopexin, including the six sites of carbohydrate attachment and the location of the six intrachain disulfide bonds.…”
