The Design of a Controller for the Steer-by-Wire System Using the Hardware-In-the-Loop-Simulation System

Abstract: Drive-by-Wire (DBW) technologies improve conventional vehicle performance and a Steer-by-Wire (SBW) system is one of the DBW technologies. The control algorithm of the SBW system was designed in this paper. To verify the control algorithm, the SBW system is modeled using the bond graph method. The first aim of the control algorithm is controlling the steering wheel assist motor to make the real vehicle's steering feel and for a vehicle designer to adjust the steering feel as he finds necessary. Therefore, torq… Show more

“…Use of CIL to develop control strategies in steer-bywire (SBW) systems are demonstrated in Refs. [92][93][94][95][96][97] The typical approach uses a mechanical connection from the SBW system to a hydraulic cylinder which is controlled to emulate the lateral tyre forces generated when a vehicle is subject to steering manoeuvres.…”

“…In such systems, emulation has been employed to replicate the behaviour of combustion engines [1], electrical steering systems [2] or more recently steer-by wire systems [3] and gas engine start-up sequences for all electric vehicles with embedded generators [4]. Nevertheless, drive train emulation has been also employed in the renewable field, as in the wind energy scenario, where different Authors proposed wind turbine test benches reproducing the dynamics of a real turbine on a smaller scale.…”

“…An essential element for the successful development of new ideas is the availability of good real-time test benches ( [1], [2]). Real car prototypes for the experimental test are usually available at car manufacturer's premises within the frame of a joint research program, as in the case of the present work.…”
