The Determinants of Pakistan Exports of Textile: An Integrated Demand and Supply Approach

Abstract: The determinants of demand and supply of textile and clothing exports of Pakistan are examined for seven major trading partners (US, UK, Canada, Italy, France, Japan and Spain) over the period 1972 to 2013. The simultaneous equation model is estimated by Generalised Method of Moment to handle simultaneous equation bias and for consistent and more precise estimates classical Empirical Bayes technique is applied. The results reveal that income of trading partners and devaluati… Show more

“…Table 1 shows that textile and clothing exports are contributing around 90% of total manufacturing exports of Pakistan during 2005–17. A good number of studies has been conducted to find the determinants of textiles’ exports [5,6]. After textile and clothing sector, chemical products’ sector is second largest contributor in the manufacturing exports of Pakistan.…”

“…the very data to recreate a prior distribution, from which a posterior distribution is reached. The bias and imprecision that a small sample suffers from, the empirical Bayes method helps mitigate by generating a prior distribution from given data, from which hyperparameters are estimated to get at a posterior distribution yielding more stable results with lower standard errors, less susceptible to bias arising from erratic outliers [57][58][59][60][61]. This gives us confidence that the relationship between microfinance intensity and distrust is not driven by extremely strong association in any particular year as such extreme co-variations are allocated lower weights in proportion to their deviation from the universe of values.…”

“…A study conducted by Latif and Javid (2016) for the span of 1972 to 2013 and employing GMM estimates, realizes the income of trading partners as well as real effective exchange rate as the significant (positively influencing) determinants of Pakistan's textile exports. In the very perspective, the distinction of this study lies in terms of both the variables used for analysis (specification of the model) and the time period under consideration along with the fact that there exists no literature in Pakistan which examines the impact of energy crisis on manufactured exports which doubtlessly lies at the core of the issue at hand (Nawaz, Ahmad, Hussain, & Bhatti, 2020;Shafiq, ur Raheem, & Ahmed, 2020).…”
