ObjectivesThis study aims to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and factors related to daily activities in a representative Korean population.MethodsThis study was based on the questions about musculoskeletal symptoms in the Korean General Social Survey 2010. The questionnaire about musculoskeletal symptoms was adopted from Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency guide, and it includes general characteristics, characteristics of pain, work type, work intensity and a 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). We utilized the criteria of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to define the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms. Demographic, behavioral and socioeconomic factors were analyzed using logistic regression.ResultsThe prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms was 38.3%. The prevalence was higher in females, the elderly, those without health insurance, and those with a low income, low education, and occupations with a heavy workload. The prevalence by body part was highest in the back, shoulder, and knee, in that order. The physical component summary and mental component summary of the SF-12 decreased with increasing musculoskeletal symptoms.ConclusionsMusculoskeletal symptoms are very common in the general population, and related to various socio-demographic factors. These results suggest that active prevention and management of musculoskeletal symptoms is needed at a national level.

The Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (KSHAP) is a population-based longitudinal study of health determinants among elderly Koreans. The target population of the KSHAP are people aged 60 years or older and their spouses living in a rural community of Korea. A complete enumeration survey was conducted in the first wave of the KSHAP on 94.7% (814 of 860) of the target population between December 2011 and July 2012. The KSHAP-Health Examination (KSHAP-HE) cohort consists of 698 people who completed additional health examinations at a public health center (n=533) or at their home (n=165). Face-to-face questionnaires were used to interview participants on their demographics, social network characteristics, medical history, health behaviors, cognitive function, and depression symptoms. Health center examinations included anthropometric measures, body impedance analysis, resting blood pressure measurement, radial artery tonometry, bone densitometry, the timed up-and-go test, and fasting blood analysis. However, only anthropometric measures, blood pressure measurement, and non-fasting blood analysis were available for home health examinations. Collaboration is encouraged and access to the KSHAP baseline data will be available via the website of the Korean Social Science Data Archive (http://www.kossda.or.kr).

Constituição Brasileira, artigo 196. ix RESUMO O lixo é uma produção diária e crescente na população mundial. Em diversos países, a coleta do lixo ocorre de maneiras diversificadas. No Brasil, a coleta do lixo é feita pelos coletores de lixo, que passam de casa em casa acompanhados do caminhão, recolhendo o que nos é imprestável. Já nas ruas, avenidas e praças, o lixo é retirado do chão pelos varredores de rua. Nas duas profissões supracitadas há um fator comum, a insalubridade. Não somente devido ao contato direto com o lixo e com todos os seus microorganismos, fontes de doenças, mas as sobrecargas musculares, articulares e ósseas de tais profissões têm grande peso sobre esses trabalhadores, que também estão expostos a alterações de temperaturas e outros riscos de se trabalhar na rua. Além disso, destaca-se o descaso da sociedade para com esses indivíduos, percebido no mau acondicionamento do lixo e pelo desinteresse sobre a saúde deles, evidenciado na extrema escassez de pesquisas sobre o tema. Devido à grande importância dos coletores e dos varredores em nossa sociedade e devido às pesquisas inversamente proporcionais, surge a necessidade de investigar a saúde desses "trabalhadores do lixo".A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo a avaliação dos coletores de lixo e dos varredores de rua de um município da RMC para saber se têm queixas osteomusculares e se essas queixas têm relação com variáveis como: tipo de profissão, índice de massa corporal (IMC), idade, tempo de profissão, nível de escolaridade e tabagismo. Para isso, esses trabalhadores foram submetidos a dois instrumentos de coleta de dados: o Questionário Nórdico de Sintomas Osteomusculares e um questionário sócio-demográfico-laboral. Após coletadas as informações, a análise descritiva dos dados demonstrou que 56% dos coletores relataram sentir dores musculoesqueléticas nos últimos 12 meses e a mesma proporção disseram sentir esses sintomas nos últimos 7 dias.
