The Development and Initial Validation of the Irrational Performance Beliefs Inventory (iPBI)

Abstract: The growing use of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) in performance contexts (e.g., business, sport) has highlighted the absence of a contextually valid and reliable measure of irrational beliefs. This paper reports the development and initial validation of the Irrational Performance Beliefs Inventory (iPBI). The iPBI was developed to provide a validated measure of the four core irrational beliefs of REBT theory. Item development was completed in three stages comprising two expert panels and one novice … Show more

“…Following an agreement between the researchers and the cognitive debriefing interviewer on minor changes, the translation was finalized. (Turner et al, 2018a), and good testretest reliability in academy athlete and university student samples (Turner, Slater, Dixon, & Miller, 2018). In the present study, the iPBI was translated into Thai, and was used in all subsequent data collection and analyses.…”

“…The original iPBI was translated into Thai with permission from developers (Turner et al, 2018a). The translation process followed the Translation and Cultural Adaptation (TCA) -Principles of Good Practice, proposed by the TCA working group of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcome Research's Quality of Life Special Interest Group (ISPOR's QOL-SIG; Wild et al, 2005).…”

“…In order to ensure that an intervention to enhance resilience was appropriate for the athletes, a screening process took place inside the ISN. Twenty-eight elite athletes (11 females and 17 males from wushu, squash and athletics) completed the iPBI (Turner et al, 2016) and CD-RISC 10 (Connor, Davidson, 2003) in May 2015. Of the athletes screened, five were selected for the intervention because they were the lowest scoring in resilience levels.…”

“…Responses were provided on a five-point scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). The iPBI has demonstrated construct, concurrent and predictive validity in achievement contexts (Cunningham & Turner, 2016;Turner et al, 2017 Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988) is a 20-item self-report scale that measures two dimensions: positive affect (10 items; e.g., "excited") and negative affect (10 items; e.g., "distressed"). Participants were asked to rate the extent to which they experienced each emotion over the past seven days.…”
