“…In contrast, they were present throughout the year (but especially plentiful in autumn) in the Petite Côte. It is known that this species tolerates strong environmental variations (Cury & Fontana, ), which would explain why S. maderensis is also found in the cold Mauritanian coastal waters (Boëly & Fréon, ; Corten & Sadegh, ) and even in the colder waters of the Sahara Bank (Ettahiri, Berraho, Vidy, Ramdani, & Do chi, ).…”

“…On the east side, it is found from the Strait of Gibraltar to South Africa, and eastward to the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea (Froese & Pauly, 2017). During recent decades, this species has become an important fishery resource in north-west Africa, constituting the main small pelagic fish caught in most of the riparian countries of the region (Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau) (Mbaye et al ., 2015; Ba et al ., 2017; Corten et al ., 2017). In this area, no conclusive information is available on the population structure of S. aurita and it is assumed that there is a single population which migrates among the different Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) shared by these countries (Garcia, 1982; Bacha et al , 2016; Corten et al ., 2017; Ba et al ., 2019).…”

“…and Scomber colias Gmelin, 1789. In addition, round sardinella demand has increased with the establishment of fishmeal industries, but also with the opening of new export markets in the sub-region, which inevitably contributes to the increase in fishing effort in the area (Corten et al ., 2017; Diankha et al ., 2018).…”

“…The agreements between the biggest intensive marine aquaculture company in Turkey and part of the Turkish purse seiners were highly significant to make the area as a new fishing target (Baki, ). Their captures were directed to fish meal factories placed in Mauritania, in turn leading to an increasing fishing pressure in the seas around Mauritania (Corten, Braham, & Sadegh, ). This means a combination of commodity deepening and commodity widening strategies is at play, and the intensification of production in aquaculture has led capital once again to look for new areas to exploit, so as to be able to benefit from a higher ecological surplus from captures that will then be turned into feed for the fish in their farms.…”
