The Development of an Displacement Sensor Embedded Voice Coil Motor Based Fast-Tool-Servo for the Machining of Micro-Structure

Abstract: The Fast Tool Servo (FTS) is widely used for the machining of micro-structures, especially for optical micro lens array. The working principle of FTS is that a voice coil motor or a piezoelectric (PZT) actuator is used as the driving elements, and the flexure hinges are developed as the guide mechanisms. In addition, an optical encoder is applied to measure the displacement. However, the existing design of FTS is too complicated and expensive. One reason is that the stroke of the FTS for the fabrication of opt… Show more

“…This control algorithm enables the VCM sliding-mode system to achieve precise position tracking [17]. Some researchers prototyped an embedded displacement sensor within the VCM based on the displacement proportional to the ampere force of its specified guide system [18]. These designs could reduce system costs and enhance the control performance for fabricating the microlens array.…”

“…There are several different variations of FTS, where the classification of each is based on the driving mechanism behind the oscillatory tool. The three most common variations are piezoelectric (PZT) [50,56,90], Lorentz force (LRT) [62,95,108], and Maxwell normal stress motor-driven (MNM) [69,70,105].…”
