The Development of High-Performance Leaf Seals

Abstract: Recently, from the environmental point of view, demand for a combined cycle plant is increasing, and superior gas turbine performance is being rapidly promoted at the same time. As one of the key technologies for superior performance, reduction of secondary air leakage, which is necessary for blade cooling and bearing sealing, is required. Especially, reduction of air leakage through rotating parts and stationary parts clearance is critical.

“…As a non-contact seal, the gas film seal has become a highly potential seal form in the application of turbomachinery such as a compressor because of its advantages of low leakage and long service life. 14 The intershaft seal, an important seal aimed at sealing the intermediate bearing which supports the two rotors in a dual-rotor aero-engine, bears a harsh working condition to meet the requirements of high speed, high temperature, high pressure difference and high reliability. Due to the disadvantage of large leakage in the current intershaft labyrinth seal, researchers expect to adopt the promising gas film seal to improve this problem.…”

“…Therefore, the fluid dynamic sealing technology is studied to apply it to highspeed fluid machinery such as aero engines, which has received much attention. 3 Ma et al have done extensive research in cylindrical gas seal and studied the design of spiral groove structure, dynamic characteristics analysis and interface structure.…”
