The development of nations conditions the disease space

Abstract: Using the economic complexity methodology on data for disease prevalence in 195 countries during the period of 1990-2016, we propose two new metrics for quantifying the disease space of countries. With these metrics, we analyze the geography of diseases and empirically investigate the effect of economic development on the health complexity of countries. We show that a higher income per capita increases the complexity of countries’ diseases. We also show that complex diseases tend to be non-ubiquitous diseases … Show more

“…Out of these, 87 were single country publications (SCP), and only 5 were multiple country publications (MCP). Similarly, developing countries such as China (77,70,7) and India (62, 61,1), while Japan (56,52,4); South Korea (51, 49, 2); Spain (44,40,4) were the top productive corresponding author's country. The frequency of publications among the top countries ranges from 12.40% to 5.93%.…”

“…More specifically, developed countries with high per capita income are expected to control their disease and outbreaks better than developing countries. 70,71 Thus, during the seafood disease outbreak, the developed country, (USA) should usually control the outbreak better than Spain, and Mexico, lending credence to the role of economic status as a driver of effective disease control programs. 70,71 Articles in the first decade (1990)(1991)(1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000) gain more citations than other decades due to high-quality journals and considerable years of publication.…”

“…), also using statistical comparisons or robust econometric studies with the metric of EC as a variable to provide evidence in the economic geography field and unraveling various types of relatedness (as a metric of EC). Applications range from classic studies of product space for understanding economic diversification to novel applications of relatedness techniques for depicting proximities among musical genres [8], sports [9], and diseases [10]. This paper constitutes a systematic literature review, whose central question is as follows: What are the emerging research trends bridging economic complexity and sustainability dimensions?…”

“…Trade data are commonly used because their classifications are internationally comparable. However, the application of the methodology to other datasets has been accelerating in recent years and includes data on technological innovation (patents), research papers, industries, green products, occupations and diseases [19][20][21][22][23][24][25] (In a recent paper, Hidalgo [26] provides a thorough review of economic complexity theory and its applications).…”
