The Development of Preliminary HiTOP Internalizing Spectrum Scales

Abstract: As part of a broader project to create a comprehensive self-report measure for the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology consortium, we developed preliminary scales to assess internalizing symptoms. The item pool was created in four steps: (a) clarifying the range of content to be assessed, (b) identifying target constructs to guide item writing, (c) developing formal definitions for each construct, and (d) writing multiple items for each construct. This yielded 430 items assessing 57 target constructs. Res… Show more

“…As has historically been the case, new nosological proposals are often followed by an attempt to assess psychopathology in a manner that conforms to the new perspective. Thus, it no surprise that members of the HiTOP consortium has formed working groups aimed at measuring psychopathology that is in line with their dimensional model (Cicero et al, 2021;Sellbom et al, in press;Simms et al, in press;Watson et al, 2021;Zimmerman et al, in press).…”

“…This article is intended solely for the personal use of the individual user and is not to be disseminated broadly. symptoms, as distress symptoms are particularly strongly associated with NA (Watson & Naragon-Gainey, 2014;Watson et al, 2022). Although we are not able to test this definitively without EMA measures specific to distress and fear, the PANAS previously has been used to create subscales as proxies for distress and fear (e.g., Ebesutani et al, 2011).…”

“…Well-Being as conceptualized in the IDAS has been described as capturing high energy and positive affectivity (Watson et al, 2007), such that it appears to be quite similar to PA. Regarding the Dysphoria scale, the very strong between-person correlation with NA may be driven by variance shared with distress (vs. fear) symptoms, as distress symptoms are particularly strongly associated with NA (Watson & Naragon-Gainey, 2014; Watson et al, 2022). Although we are not able to test this definitively without EMA measures specific to distress and fear, the PANAS previously has been used to create subscales as proxies for distress and fear (e.g., Ebesutani et al, 2011).…”

“…Sleep. NIDA PhAB's Sleep dimension probably also overlaps with HiTOP's Internalizing spectrum given that some sleep problems (i.e., insomnia, lassitude, nightmares) are directly incorporated into the assessment of HiTOP Internalizing (Watson et al, 2021). Instead, both systems focus on the potential bidirectional associations between internalizing and sleep problems, such that stress, anxiety, and depression are thought to cause disruptions in sleep and poor sleep quality, which exacerbates anxiety and mood problems (Cox & Olatunji, 2020).…”
