The Development of Psychiatric Disorders from Adaptive Behavior to Serious Mental Health Conditions

Abstract: In this paper we look at the manifestation of different psychopathologies and propose that the disorders are on a continuum with normal behavior which, when exaggerated, becomes maladaptive. The basic paradigm of adaptation consists of cognition, affect, motivation, and behavior. Maladaptation occurs when there are errors in cognition involving the four domains of gain, loss, threat, or offense, thus triggering positive or negative affect, motivation, and subsequent behavior. Behavior is traditionally focused … Show more

“…Proponents of CT might reasonably point out that being less philosophical does not make it any less effective and that the opposite could be true. Indeed, they might also point out that over time CT has incorporated more philosophical themes, including the pursuit of a meaningful life (A. T. Beck et al ., 2021) and mindfulness (J. S. Beck, 2020). Moreover, CT adapts according to disorder requirements as evidenced by robust real-world data and has demonstrated efficacy across a wide range of clinical settings in a body of literature that is substantial (Padesky and Beck, 2003).…”

“…An expected outgrowth of the recovery literature has been the development of EBPs that explicitly address the principle elements of recovery. While a comprehensive review of recovery-informed interventions is beyond the scope of this article, some notable examples of such EBPs include recovery-oriented cognitive therapy (CT-R; Beck et al, 2021) and social skills training (SST; Bellack et al, 2004). While both treatment protocols were developed for individuals living with serious mental illness, CT-R and SST diverge from one another based on their theoretical rationales and emphases on specific treatment ingredients, structures, and settings necessary for change.…”

“…Programs vary from university hospitals to community-based agencies, with organization-defined inclusion/ exclusion criteria. Essential CSC services, 10 including pharmacotherapy, recovery-oriented cognitive therapy, 11 case management, Supported Employment and Education (SEE), crisis services, family/caregiver involvement, outreach, psychoeducation, and treatment and discharge planning, are offered by each program for at least 2 years by a multidisciplinary team. CSC interventions' intensity and frequency for participants were maintained during the pandemic, including TMH appointments, per annual site fidelity review in fall 2020.…”
