La conceptualización del apego y la explicación teórica que lo avala ha sido una enorme contribución para la comprensión del desarrollo humano, ocupando así un lugar destacado en la historia de la psicología. Los seres humanos creamos vínculos emocionales; y lo que facilita que se desarrollen y se mantengan lo denominamos representaciones mentales (de uno mismo y de los demás —modelos operativos internos—), ayudándonos así a entender el mundo y reaccionar adecuadamente, a predecir y comprender los sucesos, a iniciar y mantener conductas que favorecen la supervivencia (como el mantenimiento de vínculos) y a sentirnos seguros. En este capítulo tratamos de abordar cómo surge y ha evolucionado esta teoría, qué tipos de apego existen y se exponen las bases de los modelos operativos internos, núcleo fundamental para la comprensión de la importancia del apego.
