The development of the national tuberculosis research priority in Indonesia: A comprehensive mixed-method approach

Abstract: Ranked second in global tuberculosis (TB) incidence, Indonesia has developed a National Strategy for TB Prevention and Control 2020–2024 to accelerate the TB elimination program. Research and innovation are key pillars to support the program and need to be prioritised. This study aimed to develop updated national TB research priorities in Indonesia. This study was a mixed-methods study consisting of an open survey, a published literature survey, and Delphi survey. The open survey invited all related TB stakeho… Show more

“…Progress has been made across many areas including, for example, contact tracing, clinical standards, post-treatment functional evaluation and infection control [ 28 , 29 ]. Most recently, the EndTB initiative was exemplified at a national level in Indonesia, ranked second in TB global incidence, where, in addition to the priorities already mentioned, early TB detection, treatment of children with TB, greater focus on both drug-sensitive- and drug-resistant-TB, treatment adherence and community empowerment and government policy were proposed as key priorities [ 30 ].…”

“…Many studies have also employed Delphi surveys to identify research priorities, and they are considered an essential method for developing consensual guidance and a highly informative source of evidence in healthcare research and intervention design. [27][28][29] To mitigate against selection bias, we invited stakeholders representing all sectors of both the TB health system and TB-affected communities and representatives. The relevant stakeholders included: representatives from government (the Indonesian NTP manager, NTP managers at district levels, healthcare workers at primary health centers responsible for TB program); TB-related civil society organizations (TB survivors organization [POP-TB] and Stop TB Partnership Indonesia); researchers (Indonesian TB researcher network [JetSet TB]; Indonesian Expert Committee for TB, Indonesian Psychiatrist Association, and Indonesian Public Health Association); and people with drug-susceptible (DS) and drug-resistant (DR) TB.…”
