The Diagnostic Challenge of Osteoid Osteoma in the Bones of the Hand—A Case Series

Abstract: Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a benign bone tumor that rarely occurs in the bones of the hand. Due to the comparatively non-specific symptoms when occurring in the hand, OO is often misdiagnosed at first presentation, posing a diagnostic challenge. In the present case study, six cases of phalangeal and carpal OO, treated surgically at our department between 2006 and 2020, were retrospectively reviewed. We compared all cases regarding demographic data, clinical presentation, imaging findings, time to diagnosis, surgi… Show more

“…Notwithstanding the procedural hurdles that were encountered in this case, the successful completion of radiofrequency ablation in the IR department has equally brought to light that IR departments play a pivotal role in patient care through the provision of the best possible treatments. Moreover, the financial assistance of the social services team signifies the joint efforts required for the provision of optimal patient care, especially with a limited budget, which is characteristic of most health systems [ 14 ].…”

“…Characterized by a small size, typically less than 2 cm in diameter, it often manifests with nocturnal pain that responds well to NSAIDs. While its pathophysiology and clinical presentation are well-documented, the co-occurrence of osteoid osteoma with other conditions can present unique challenges in diagnosis and management [ 2 ]. Sickle cell anaemia, a hereditary hemoglobinopathy, is one such condition that can complicate the clinical picture.…”

“…Currently, diagnosis of illness comes from characterizing the changes in protein dynamics that give rise to behavioral changes like proliferation and metastasis in cancer cells [ 24 , 25 ], and a physical change in cell shape like in sickle cell anemia [ 26 ]. It is difficult to diagnose a particular illness or disease whose symptoms can overlap with one another but be caused by different sources [ 27 , 28 , 29 ]. This is where SMT could become beneficial to better diagnose illnesses and diseases, lowering the chances of misdiagnosis.…”
