The diagnostic value of zinc transporter 8 autoantibody (ZnT8A) for type 1 diabetes in Chinese

Abstract: Background-Zinc transporter-8 (ZnT8) was recently identified as a novel autoantigen in human type 1 diabetes (T1D). Autoantibody to ZnT8 (ZnT8A) were detected in up to 80% of newonset T1D and 26% of T1D patients otherwise classified as negative on the basis of existing markers. Since no data of ZnT8A in Chinese has been reported, we aim to evaluate the utility of ZnT8A for diagnosis of autoimmune T1D in Chinese relative to other autoantibody markers.

“…The frequency of ZnT8 Ab may be related to some HLA differences, and be similar in similar populations, as in the study of Polish neighbours, Czech T1DM children, the prevalence of this Ab was similar to our results [18]. Interestingly, in Chinese T1D subject ZnT8 Ab and IA-2 Ab were less prevalent than in Caucasian populations, but similar to Japanese [27].…”

“…Serum levels of C-peptide and C-reactive protein were quantified using a chemiluminescence immunoassay on a Bayer 180SE Automated Chemiluminescence System (Bayer AG, Leverkusen, Germany) and an immunoturbidimetric assay (Orion Diagnostica, Espoo, Finland), respectively. The titers of GADA, IA2A, and ZnT8A were determined by in-house radioligand assays, as previously described (22,23).…”

“…Zinc transporter-8 -a protein that moves this essential mineral into cellsis another autoantigen that the immune system targets in some people with type 1 diabetes. 7 Autoantibodies against zinc transporter-8 were seen mainly in patients with SAID (27.3% compared with <2% in other clusters). 3 Treatment patterns also differed between some clusters.…”
