The dimensional characteristics of smooth muscle in rat blood vessels. A computer-assisted analysis.

Abstract: SUMMARY. This investigation was undertaken to provide precise information about the dimensional characteristics of vascular smooth muscle cells as related to their paracellular matrix. The representative types of vessels were fixed at the mean blood pressures of adult male Wistar rats. The shapes, positions of the nucleus, linear dimensions, volumes, and orientation within the vessel wall were determined by a computer-assisted reconstruction of the cells from serial sections. Wall-to-lumen and cellular-to-para… Show more

“…Sirius red was used for collagen staining, orcein for elastin, and haematoxylin after periodic acid oxidation for nucleus staining. Slides underwent automated image processing (NS 1500, Nachet-Vision Paris) based upon morphological principles (Todd et al, 1983;Thorball & Tranum-Jensen, 1983;Matthews et al, 1990 Chronic isradipine administration Table 1 shows the blood pressure and heart rate changes obtained in the conscious state in all groups of chronically treated animals. Mean blood pressure was decreased in both SHR groups receiving Isr, but only significantly with the high Isr dose (2.6 mg kg-' day-') and only at 1 h after administration (P<0.01).…”

“…Previous studies have shown that rat common carotid [43] and superior mesenteric arteries [44] are of the elastic type and the external iliac artery [45] is a transitional vessel, meaning that the difference does not depend on arterial type at least. In addition, an interesting finding has been reported by Shi et al [23], who demonstrated that endothelium-dependent relaxation is significantly impaired in carotid and femoral (a continuation of external iliac) arteries, but not in mesenteric arteries, from type 1 diabetic rats.…”

“…Circular smooth muscle plays a sphincteric role (Todd et al, 1983). With increased hemodynamic forces, circular smooth muscle changes orientation and migrates to the tunica adventitia (Greep & Weiss).…”
