The dimensional structure of SCL-90-R in a sample of patients with substance use disorder

Abstract: Aim: To test the dimensional structure of the Symptom Check List-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) among inpatients with substance use disorders (SUD), and to examine whether the Global Severity Index (GSI) scores discriminated between SUD patients and a general Norwegian population sample. “…We used the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R), which is a 90-item self-report measure ( 68 ) assessing psychological symptoms and distress. SCL-90-R is widely used in clinical practice and research, and validated for patients with SUD and individuals with ID ( 68 70 ). Items are rated on a five-point Likert scale indicating the degree of distress, ranging from 0 (not at all) to 4 (severely) during the 7 previous days.…”

“…The clinical cut-off for this index is 1 ( Prunas et al, 2012 ). In this study, we chose to use the GSI as a global index of psychopathology, following the suggestion of Bergly et al (2013) who pointed out a high collinearity between the nine syndromic subscales.…”

“…The checklist yields nine symptom dimension subscales: Somatization, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostility, Phobic Anxiety, Paranoid Ideation, and Psychoticism, in addition to a global severity index (GSI). The SCL-90-R is widely used in clinical practice and research and is a valid instrument for assessing general psychological distress in SUD patients (Bergly et al 2014).…”
