Abstract. The double negation has always been considered by the logical systems from ancient times to the present. In fact, that is an issue that the current syntactic theories studying human reasoning, for example, the mental logic theory, address today. However, in this paper, I claim that, in the case of some languages such as Spanish, the double negation causes problems for the cognitive theories mainly based on formal schemata and supporting the idea of a universal syntax of thought in the human mind. Thus, I propose that, given those problems, semantic frameworks such as that of the mental models theory seem to be more appropriate for explaining the human inferential activity.

The mental models theory is a current cognitive approach claiming that human intellectual activity is essentially about semantic possibilities and that syntax and logical form are not relevant. Many experimental results support this theory and its predictions. So, it appears to be justified to assume its main theses. However, in this paper, I argue that the acceptance of the mental models theory does not necessarily have to lead to a rejection of logical forms. Clear relationships between the theory and standard logic can be easily found, and I try to show this in two ways. On the one hand, I claim that the models that the theory assigns to sentences are compatible with truth tables. On the other hand, I also defend that the definitions of a connective by means of another one that can be given in standard logic hold in the mental models theory too, since the sentences that are equivalent in the former have exactly the same models in the latter.

ABSTRACT:In the late twentieth century, the final version of the mental logic theory was presented. That was a syntactic and formal approach intended to describe and explain the human inferential ability. Maybe because of several experimental results achieved during the last years that have not addressed by the theory, it can be thought that its framework is outdated today. In this paper, I try to update some particular aspects of the mental logic theory by taking recent empirical evidence and arguments coming from the specialized literature into account. Such aspects refer to the symbols that it should adopt, its actual essential schemata, and the way in which the theory can deal with denials. KEYWORDS: formal schemata; inference; mental logic; reasoning; syntax RESUMO: No final do século XX, a versão final da teoria lógica da mente foi apresentada. Ela era constituída por uma aproximação formal e sintática que objetivava descrever e explicar a habilidade de inferências humanas. Tendo em vista vários resultados experimentais obtidos nos últimos anos que fogem ao escopo desta teoria, podemos afirmar que ela, hoje, encontra se desatualizada. Neste artigo, objetivamos atualizar alguns aspectos particulares da teoria lógica da mente em relação com evidências empíricas recentes e argumentos oriundos da literatura especializada.
