The Distinct Effect of theo-Carboranyl Fragment: Its Influence on the I−I Distance in R3PI2 Complexes

Abstract: The shortest I−I distance in R3PI2 chemistry has been found by exploiting the electron‐withdrawing capacity of the o‐carboranyl fragment “RC2B10H10”. The geometry of (1‐PiPr2‐2‐Me‐1,2‐C2B10H10)⋅I2 is interpreted as a molecular charge‐transfer “spoke” structure (see picture). It is shown that the I−I bond in R3P‐I‐I can be varied in a continuous way, which poses a challenge to the concept of a bond.

“…As thioethers are weaker donors than phosphanes, we predicted that R 3 P⋅I 2 ⋅PR 3 adducts could be generated by using a very weakly coordinating phosphane ligand. By using the carboranyl phosphane (Mecarb) i Pr 2 P (Mecarb=1‐(2‐Me‐1,2‐C 2 B 10 H 10 )), the complex (Mecarb) i Pr 2 P⋅I 2 containing the shortest II distance observed in a spoke adduct was produced 9. A weaker donor ligand than (Mecarb) i Pr 2 P can be obtained by replacing the isopropyl fragments by electron‐withdrawing phenyl groups, as in (Mecarb)Ph 2 P ( 1 ) 10…”

“…Again, the results have proven the uniqueness of the o-carboranyl fragment and (1-PiPr 2 -2-Me-1,2-C 2 B 10 H 10 )ؒI 2 was synthesized (see Fig. 3) and characterized providing the shortest I-I contact 3.021(1) Å and the corresponding longest P-I distance 2.5978 (14)Å [41] in a phosphane compound.…”
