The distribution of HLA‐A and ‐B antigens in patients and their families with periodontosis

Abstract: To test the hypothesis of an association between periodontosis and the HLA-complex, 30 unrelated patients and 8 families were tissue typed for HLA-A and -B antigens. The patients were divided in two groups on an ethnic basis. Control groups consisted of unrelated individuals of the same ethnic origin. In the Negroid group I a statistically significant increase in the frequency of HLA-BW35 was found. However, this significance was not apparent when compared to a control group matched for geographical location a… Show more

“…However, family studies of early-onset periodontal disease show that localized and generalized disease can occur in the same family , and that localized disease can progress to the generalized form . Some confusion has arisen from two small-family studies of HLA antigens and periodontal disease (Cullinan et al, 1980;Saxen and Koskimies, 1984). These studies have been mistakenly construed as being genetic linkage studies, which they were not.…”

“…It is further stated that reading for pleasure refers to reading which is started at other's request then we continue since we are getting interested in. Reading for pleasure is defined as a reading in which students choose to do reading based on their own [19]. As been noted that reading has benefits such as learners' literacy competence is developed since they read for pleasure and learners who read and enjoy reading make them to be a literate [20].…”

“…Moreover, no linkage disequilibrium seemed to exist between associated alleles. The positive association of HLA-A9 and HLA-B15 with AP in Caucasians [10,12,13] but not in Lebanese is also probably accounted for by the ethnic differences between the two populations. In addition, HLADRB1*13 seemed to have a more frequent occurrence in patients with AP that are Germans of Caucasian descent [26] and HLA-B*15 was also found to be associated with AP in Indian population [27].…”

“…Genetic factors such as the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) alleles, have been reported to correlate with pre-disposition to or protection against several diseases including periodontitis [9][10][11]. In particular, HLA-A9 and HLA-B15 seem consistently associated with aggressive periodontitis in Caucasians [10,12,13], while HLA-A2, HLA-B5 and HLA-A28 are potential protective factors against periodontitis among Caucasians [10,14]. However, studies involving HLAperiodontitis association in the Lebanese ethnic group are lacking.…”
