The distribution of NPY-like immunoreactivity in the chameleon brain

Abstract: The distribution of neuropeptide Y (NPY) immunoreactivity was studied in the brain of the chameleon. Cell bodies and fibers displaying NPY-like immunoreactivity were widely dispersed throughout the brain and at the highest density in the telencephalon and diencephalon. Immunolabeled cell bodies were numerous in the medial and dorsomedial cortex and in the dorsal ventricular ridge, while the striatum and basal telencephalon only contained sparsely scattered NPY-positive somata. Immunopositive neurons were dense… Show more

“…Peptide was also widely encountered in telencephalon of tetrapods (mammals: Chronwall et al, 1985;birds: Gould et al, 2001;den Boer-Visser and Dubbeldam, 2002;reptiles: Medina et al, 1992;Bennis et al, 2001;amphibians: Danger et al, 1985;Lazar et al, 1993;Ebersole et al, 2001).…”

“…Vd in the telencephalon of teleosts corresponds to striatum/basal ganglia of higher vertebrates (Reiner and Northcutt, 1992). NPY immunoreactive cells were described in the corresponding areas in mammals (de Quidt and Emson, 1986), birds (Anderson and Reiner, 1990;Esposito et al, 2001), reptiles (Medina et al, 1992;Bennis et al, 2001) and amphibians (Tuinhof et al, 1993;Ebersole et al, 2001).…”

“…Unfortunately, reports for other species typically describe NPY-ir fiber distributions for the whole brain, and little specific information is provided on the septum; thus the present data can be compared with that for other groups only on a gross basis. In general, NPY-ir fibers are widely distributed in the vertebrate septum, encompassing both medial and lateral divisions, e.g., birds (Coturnix japonica, Aste et al, 1991; Parus sp., Gould et al, 2001), mammals (Mecrocebus murinus, Bons et al, 1990; Spermophilus sp., Reuss et al, 1990), reptiles (Gallotia gallotii, Medina et al, 1992; Podarcis hispanica, Salom et al, 1994; Chamaeleo chameleon, Bennis et al, 2001), and amphibians (Triturus cristatus, Perroteau et al, 1988;Xenopus laevis, Tuinhof et al, 1994; Typhlonectes natans, Ebersole et al, 2001). An expansive NPY-ir innervation of the septum therefore appears to be a ubiquitous tetrapod feature, although there are large species differences in the presence and location of NPY-ir perikarya.…”
