The Distribution of Rare Metals in the LCT Pegmatites from the Giraúl Field, Angola

Abstract: The Giraúl granitic pegmatite field in Angola is composed of five pegmatite types, the most evolved belong to the beryl-columbite, beryl-columbite-phosphate and spodumene types. Pegmatites are concentrically zoned with increased grain size toward a quartz core; the most evolved pegmatites have well-developed replacement units. These pegmatites are rich in Nb-Ta oxide minerals and the field has a moderate interest for critical elements such as Ta and Hf. Tourmaline, garnet and micas occur as accessory minerals.… Show more

“…Tantalite is enriched in rare alkalis, Sn, W, and contains Au, Ag, Pt, Ir, and In. Microlite contains relatively high Zr, Hf, and U, in the same way as that from the Giraúl field in Angola where late-generation tantalite is rich in Ta, Mn, Zr, and other elements [35].…”

“…The deposits of Eastern Kazakhstan formed in an alkaline granite-pegmatite system. The system gained trace elements (Ta, Nb, Be, Li, and Cs) mainly late during the process, as it is common for many such deposits [35]. The richest pegmatite veins show multistage mineralization and store diverse assemblages.…”

“…In addition, pegmatites are the source of high-quality industrial minerals feldspars, kaolinite, quartz, micas, and spodumene for ceramics or gemstones such as topaz, tourmaline, aquamarine, and spodumene [14]. The composition of the faience mass investigated which is consisting of the following components: pegmatite ceramic (90 g), bentonite clay (81 g), white clay (114 g) and chalk (15 g).…”

“…New isotope dating gave similar Ar-Ar biotite, muscovite, and lepidolite ages of 291 to 286 Ma for the Kalba phase I granites and related mineralization [16,48]. The Kalba pegmatites contain indicator elements of Li, Rb, Cs, F, B, Ta, Be, and Sn, and a number of minerals typical of rare-metal pegmatitic mineralization, which make the Kalba ores similar to other pegmatite deposits worldwide [54][55][56]: albite, cleavelandite, muscovite, lepidolite, fluorapatite, spodumene, pollucite, color tourmaline, cassiterite, tantalite, microlite, etc.…”
