“…In a geotectonicmorphological context, one of the most widely used classifi cations that fulfills the criterion of simplicity is the one proposed by Fairbridge (1980; cf. Many researchers (e.g., Day, 1981;Potter et al, 1993;Roy et al, 2001;Rustomji, 2007;Chuwen et al, 2009;Taljaard et al, 2009) would object to such a proposition. Perillo (1995a) proposed a modified version of this by distinguish ing between so-called 'primary estuaries' and 'secondary estuaries'.…”

“…The poor representation of marine species in Wilson Inlet and particularly in 2007 can be attributed to its mouth being atypically closed for the majority of the study (Chuwen et al, 2009b), and to the fact that, when briefly open, the channel scoured through the sand bar at the mouth was narrow and shallow. This paralleled the situation in an eastern Australian estuary in which the very brief and restricted opening of its mouth provided limited opportunities for marine fishes to enter (Griffiths, 2001).…”

“…The estuaries along the microtidal coast of south‐western Australia typically contain a short and narrow entrance channel, a large central basin area and the saline lower reaches of their tributaries (Hodgkin & Lenanton, 1981; Potter et al , 2010). Many of these systems become closed to the ocean, either seasonally or for longer periods, through the formation of sand bars at their mouths (Hodgkin & Hesp, 1998; Chuwen et al , 2009 a ; Potter et al , 2010). The combination of a seasonal barrier to the sea and relatively benign environmental conditions for much of the year helps account for the presence of a number of fish species that can complete their life cycles within these systems (Potter & Hyndes, 1999; Chuwen et al , 2009 b ; Hoeksema et al , 2009).…”
