The Diverse Bioactivity of α-mangostin and Its Therapeutic Implications

Abstract: α-Mangostin is a xanthone natural product isolated as a secondary metabolite from the mangosteen tree. It has attracted a great deal of attention due to its wide-ranging effects on certain biological activity, such as apoptosis, tumorigenesis, proliferation, metastasis, inflammation, oxidation, bacterial growth and metabolism. This review focuses on the key pathways directly affected by α-mangostin and how this varies between disease states. Insight is also provided, where investigated, into the key structural… Show more

“…α-Mangostin is a natural xanthone product isolated from the pericarps of the mangosteen tree as a secondary metabolite, representing one of the most studied chemopreventive agents. 115 Substantial evidence suggests that α-mangostin can interfere with the major stages of carcinogenesis (initiation, promotion, and progression). 116 , 117 Moreover, α-Mangostin exhibits a novel biological function against inflammation in various inflammatory diseases.…”

“…[17] Among various xanthone derivatives, α-mangostin (MN) is the major one possessing a wide range of biological properties. [18] Even though several reports are available on the biological (pharmacological) applications of MN, its optoelectronic properties are less explored. In this paper, we have exploited the fluorescence quenching interaction of GQDs with MN as a tool for the detection of carbofuran.…”

“…The pericarp of mangosteen fruit contains a variety of secondary metabolites such as prenylated and oxygenated xanthones [17] . Among various xanthone derivatives, α‐mangostin ( MN ) is the major one possessing a wide range of biological properties [18] . Even though several reports are available on the biological (pharmacological) applications of MN , its optoelectronic properties are less explored.…”

“…Sanguinarine, (R)-Shikonin, Tanshinone IIA, Honokiol, and α-Mangostin are all natural compounds that have been isolated from the plant species Sanguinaria canadensis , Lithospermum erythrorhizon , Salvia miltiorrhiza , Magnolia officinalis , and Garcinia mangostana , respectively [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. Fisetin is a flavonoid that has been isolated from different plant species in the Fabaceae and Anarcadiaceae families, as well as in several comestible fruits [ 29 ].…”
