“…Historically, the study of leaf traits on the colonization of epiphylls was focused on angiosperms (Coley et al, 1993; Coley & Kursar, 1996; Lücking, 1998a), while ferns have been widely neglected with exception of the studies of Lücking (1998a) on Diplazium ceratolepis , D. lindbergii , Thelypteris gigantea , Salpichlaena volubilis , Ctenitis subincisa , of Voglgruber (2011) on Polybotrya cervina , and of Farias et al (2021) on 11 fern species including P. cervina . This research gap is especially surprising because ferns comprise up to 13% of the mean leaf cover of the tropical forest understorey (Harms et al, 2004), which is the preferred microhabitat of epiphyll communities.…”

“…Older sterile leaves also exhibited a dense covering of epiphylls although the timing of the appearance and growth of these obviously diverse communities were not noted. Identification of the lichen component has been a topic of study by Farias et al (2021) in Brazil who found that D. geniculata and D. nodosa each hosted one species of foliicolous lichen [Porina epiphylla (Fée) Fée (Trichotheliaceae) and a Tricharia species (Gomphillaceae), respectively]. However, Cerón-Carpio et al (2023) found that D. nodosa sterile leaves, with a mean lifespan of 30.7 mo in a rainforest in Mexico (compared to 33.5 mo in this study) hosted 27 species of foliicolous lichens, three or more times as many as the other seven fern species they surveyed.…”
