The Domestic Violence Fatality Review

Abstract: Domestic Violence Fatality Review (DVFR) teams are a means of identifying systems’ gaps in the coordinated response to domestic violence. While the number of homicide reviews has grown, little is known about whether DVFRs facilitate change in the community-level response to domestic violence. This research evaluated whether the recommendations made by one state-level DVFR had an effect on community and organizational priorities and practices. The results indicate that the recommendations influence countywide p… Show more

“…This study also has several important implications. The study reinforces the need to close the gap between the most recent production of research and the utilization of the findings by practitioners (Larrivée et al 2012 ; Storer et al 2013 ). While research has highlighted the added complexities of geographic isolation for rural DV victims it appears that the actual implementation of these practical solutions still remains slow to progress (Larrivée et al 2012 ).…”

“…Education also encompasses professional education such as training for service providers which has remained a major recommendation in many Domestic Violence Death Review Committee (DVDRC) reports (Dawson 2017 ). The current findings and previous literature on the recommendation of education suggest the importance of knowledge translation from research to actual programs and campaigns supporting public and professional education (Larrivée et al 2012 ; Storer et al 2013 ).…”

“…The researchers argue that organizations need incentives to act on recommendations and suggest that positive media coverage of good practice or innovation grants might function in this way. Support and training are identified as necessary for individual organizations to make the shift from prioritization to implementation of recommendations (Storer et al, 2013). Such support might be derived from national networks such as the National Domestic Violence Fatality Review Initiative cited by Reif and Jaffe (2019) or international networks such as the WHO (Bugeja et al, 2015).…”

“…Given their specific mandates, individual organisations cannot meet the needs of every type of risk situation (Comit e d'expert sur les homicides intrafamiliaux, 2012 [Intrafamilial Homicide Experts Committee, 2012]). The recommendations presented by a number of committees that have studied deaths by intrafamilial homicides underlined how much collaboration is needed to prevent such deaths (Dawson et al, 2017;Jaffe et al, 2013;Storer et al, 2013;Websdale, 2020). Some coordinated community responses interweave various agencies to cultivate a collaborative force that harmonises efforts to end intimate partner violence, hold violence-perpetrating partners accountable and empower survivors (Shorey et al, 2004).…”
