The drawing behavior of polyvinylalcohol fibers

Abstract: SYNOPSISThe solid-state drawing behavior and properties of solution-spun polyvinylalcohol fibers were investigated. A comparison was made with solution-spun, ultra-drawn polyethylene fibers. The maximum attainable draw ratio of polyvinylalcohol fibers is low ( -20) , even at optimized conditions with respect to polymer concentration in solution. In contrast to polyethylene, the maximum attainable draw ratio hardly increases with increasing molecular weight. However, high modulus ( -70 GPa) and strength ( -2.… Show more

“…Several spinning techniques such as gel spinning [16][17][18] and crosslinking spinning 19) , of great importance in commercial aspect, have been developed to enhance the mechanical properties of PVA fiber. Additional attempts to obtain high performance fibers following fiber spinning include ultrahigh drawing of gel-spun fiber 17) , zone drawing 20) , multi-step drawing 21) , hot drawing 22) , and annealing 23) .…”

“…Hence it is accepted that the formation of rigid crystals by hydrogen bonding should be limited for the effective drawing to obtain high-performance PVA fibers 16,20) . The extent of drawing which is applied in the preparation of gel fiber and then ultimate fiber has a critical effect on mechanical properties.…”

“…Modification of chitosan with other polymers is a widely examined problem. As adblends to chitosan there are applied the following compounds: poly(vinyl alcohol) (Fambri, Pegoretti, Fenner, Incardona, & Migliaresi, 1997;Kim, Oark, & Kim, 2003;Mucha, Ludwiczak, & Kawiń ska, 2005;Schellekens & Bastiansen, 1991;Zhao et al, 2003) as well as polylactide and poly(lactid acid) (Messai et al, 2005;Peesan, Supaphal, & Rujiravanit, 2005). Great hopes are connected with chitosan blends containing cellulose and its derivatives (Hasagawa, Isogai, Onabe, Usuda, & Atalla, 1992;Twu, Huang, Chang, & Wang ,2003) and with poly(ethylene oxide) (Amiji, 1995;Wrzyszczyń ski et al, 1995;Mucha, Piekielna, & Wieczorek, 1999).…”

“…Particularly with gel spinning, one of methods to obtain high performance PVA fibers, it is indispensable to add cations to cause crosslinking when water is used as a solvent of PVA [3][4][5][6][7][8] . This inevitably makes the solution basic resulting in the corrosion of spinning systems.…”
