The Drivers and Performance of Environmental Practices in the Chinese Construction Industry

Abstract: With the global concern of environmental protection and sustainability, construction firms are required to develop and implement environmental practices (EP) to mitigate the negative impacts of project activities on the environment. This paper attempts to explore two potential drivers (i.e., government regulations and project team’s knowledge and skills) and performance outcomes (i.e., environmental performance and organizational performance) when the firm implementing EP in construction projects. A survey-bas… Show more

“…Despite the importance of green resources and creativity based leadership to the sustainability of construction firms most of studies examined other factors like social practice and performance, environment and economic performance, technology and business innovativeness and so on (Bamgbade, Kamaruddeen, & Nawi, 2017;Li, Ding, & Sun, 2019;Lu, Ye, Chau, & Flanagan, 2018). However, Pero, Moretto, Bottani, & Bigliardi (2017) argued that supply chain collaboration among parties needed for achieving sustainability in construction industry.…”

“…Sustainability, in its three-fold meaning (i.e., economic, environmental and social), is an increasingly important issue for the construction industry [43,95,96]. Environmental policies and customer concerns are stimulating the entire construction supply chain, a major contributor to environmental pollution, to adopt sustainability practices to minimize the negative consequences of project activities on environments while maximizing contribution to economics and society [97][98][99][100]. Sustainability practices can be distinguished between core and facilitating practices [45].…”

“…), environmental training, environmental auditing and green related research and development. The literature indicates that sustainability is beneficial for the environment, generates cost savings and improves organizational performance, such as enhanced sales revenue and market share [100,106]. To that end, a strategic orientation towards sustainability from one company is not enough for that company to be fully sustainable, but an all-encompassing effort is needed.…”

“…The significance of institutional isomorphism in the project context is still questionable [43] as the literature reports little or no impact of certain institutional pressures in project settings [44]. Moreover, the study of Li et al [45] doubts the significance of coercive isomorphism (government regulations) in managing environmental sustainability in construction projects. Likewise, the study of Willar et al [30] highlights the gaps between government regulations and the implementation of sustainability criteria in construction projects in developing countries.…”
