“…In the most influenced region in Texas, annual precipitation dropped by more than 50% from 667 mm (1895-2011 climatology) to 267 mm for the 2011 water year (October 2010-September 2011) (Long et al 2013). The composite drought severity index (Svoboda et al 2002) provided by the U.S. Drought Monitor (www.droughtmonitor.unl.edu) shows that until late June 2011, more than 88% areas in the southern and 84% in the southeastern United States experienced drought conditions of different extent, and nearly half of the areas were under the most severe D4 type (exceptional drought characterized by intensity).
