The dual‐process theory and understanding of stocks and flows

Abstract: Recent evidence suggests that using the analytic mode of thinking (System 2) can improve people's performance in stock–flow (SF) tasks. In this paper, we further investigate the effects by implementing several different interventions in two studies. First, we replicate a previous finding that answering analytical questions before the SF task approximately doubles the likelihood of answering the stock questions correctly. We also investigate effects of three other interventions that can potentially prime partic… Show more

“…Second, we divided cognitive responses into the dual processes of perception and cognition based on psychological language, finding that user perception affects users' cognitive responses and behaviours. Cognitive and emotional responses arising from psychological language stimulation promoted dissemination behaviours, which is consistent with previous studies (Greenwald 1990;Lai and Yang 2014;Shi and Ji 2014;Baghaei Lakeh and Ghaffarzadegan 2016;MacLeod 2016). We tested cognitive and emotional responses in emergencies and analysed their effect on dissemination behaviours.…”

“…System 2 (S2) may or may not intervene to control, revise analytically, and replace the intuitive response provided by S1. Appropriate learning activities aimed to foster S1 and S2 processes, and their interaction may help improve problem-solving and decisionmaking performances [16,17].…”

“…Answers to these questions represent their ability to infer the value of the stock (people in the store) from its inflow and outflow (entering and leaving). Later studies have explored methods for improving participants' performance on DS tasks (Sterman, 2010; Baghaei Lakeh and Ghaffarzadegan, 2015, 2016).…”
