The E‐R‐A Model: The Role of Feelings in Family Therapy Reconsidered: Implications for a Classification of Theories of Family Therapy

Abstract: The importance of considering a continuum of Emotionality (E) separately from Rationality (R) or Activity (A) is emphasized. A model showing equally all three aspects is presented that allows a clearer classification of family therapy theorists than has been possible heretofore. Diagnostic, therapeutic, and research implications are hinted at, but will be part of future work.

“…As stated in the introduction, the various models of therapy have been compared by examining the emphasis they place on the areas of beliefs, actions, and feelings as they pertain to the problems clients present (Haley, 1971;L'Abate & Frey, 1981;Madanes, 1981). Strategic therapists tend to view problems or symptoms as resulting from and maintained by the mishandling of normal life difficulties (Fisch, Weakland, & Segal, 1982;Haley, 1973;Hoffman, 1981;Weakland, Fisch, Watzlawick, & Bodin, 1974).…”

“…The role of emotions and feelings has been widely considered in psychotherapy (Alexander & French, ; Greenberg & Pascual‐Leone, ) as well as in family therapy (L'Abate & Frey, ). However the first prominent authors in the systemic and strategic fields either refrained from mentioning them (Watzlawick, Weakland, & Fisch, ) or cautioned therapists against the risk of emotions distracting them from a systemic view (Selvini Palazzoli, Boscolo, Cecchin, & Prata, ).…”

“…Since the publication of Guerin's (1976) work other theoretical models, such as systemic family therapy (Selvini-Palazzoli, Boscolo, Cecchin, and Prata, 1974, 1978 and White's model (1989) have emerged. As well, further attempts at classifying the various 'models and schools of family therapy have appeared in the literature (e.g., Goldenberg and Goldenberg, 1985;Gurman 1979;Kaslow, 1980;L'Abate and Frey, 1981;Nichols, 1984;Zimmerman and Sims, 1983). According to Goldenberg and Goldenberg (1985), these classifications are limited because they have not included all theoretical positions.…”
