Desmond argued convincingly that although it can be established that both Mantell and Buckland had significant roles in the discovery and interpretation of these giant land-dwelling fossil reptiles, it was the complex motivation of Richard Owen arising from his personal aspirations and behaviour, together with his competitive attitude to his scientific contemporaries which, allied to his scientific beliefs, resulted in the creation of that nomenclatorial landmark.…”

“…In the course of some research into Charles Darwin (Tee 1978), who was a friend of Babbage, I had noticed a letter Babbage wrote to Dr. Gideon Algernon Mantell (1792-1852), who first discovered dinosaurs (Delair and Sarjeant 1975 In the Auckland Public Library is a copy of Babbage's Calculating Engines (Babbage 1889), with a bookplate recording that it had been presented in 1896 by "Babbage Esq; New Zealand"-presumably by Charles Whitmore Babbage (1841Babbage ( -1923, eldest son of Benjamin Herschel Babbage (see Figure 9). I telephoned and wrote to several people named Babbage without getting any definite information.…”
