Klju~ne besede: beseda geologija, etimologija besede geologija, zgodovina geologije, razvoj geolo{ke znanosti, filozofija geologijeKey words: word geology, etymology of word geology, history of geology, geological sciences development, philosophy of geology Izvle~ek V obdobju do sredine 18. stoletja se je pomen besede geologija spreminjal, od prve naklju~ne zloženke geologia, ki jo je 14. stoletju zapisal de Bury, preko Aldrovandijevega zapisa giologia v za~etku 17. stoletja, vse do kon~ne uveljavitve besede geologija z njenim zapisom v francoski Enciklopediji leta 1751. V geolo{ki literaturi so znana nekatera zgodnja dela, ki uporabljajo besedo geologija, s pomo~jo internetnih virov smo odkrili {e nekatera druga zgodnja dela, v katerih se pojavlja beseda geologija in literatura o njih ne poro~a. Sem sodijo dela Zahariusa Grapa, Joannesa Schnabla, Johanna Gregoria v nem{~ini, hkrati je podana kratka analiza nekaterih drugih nem{kih del druge polovice 18. stoletja, ki so pomembna za obmo~je dana{nje Slovenije. Na podlagi dostopnih digitaliziranih virov je bila opravljena analiza zgodnjih objav besede geologija v slovenskem jeziku. Prva objava besednega korena geol-se kot uradna novica pojavi leta 1849 v ~asopisu Slovenija. Med zgodnej{e publiciste, ki so uporabljali besedo geologija in njene izvedenke, je potrebno {teti Davorina Trstenjaka. Prva dalj{a objava o geolo{ki dejavnosti se pojavi v ~asopisu Novice leta 1853. Na podlagi predstavljenih zgodovinskih podatkov je podana interpretacija zgodovinskega razvoja besede geologija in njenega zgodovinskega konteksta v razvoju znanosti. AbstractIn the period up to 18 th century the meaning of the word geology has substantially changed; from Latin word geologia written by de Bury in the 14 th century, through the use of word giologia by Aldrovandi in the beginning of 17 th century and to near final definition of word geology that appeared in French Encyclopaedia from 1751. With the help of Internet some other early works not known to the literature of geology history were discovered. Among them are German books where in the title word geology is also present. Works of Zaharius Grapo, Joannes Schnabel and Johann Gregorii can be listed. Short analysis of other German geological works from the second half of the 18 th century important for Slovenian territory are briefly presented. Starting from the database of earlier Slovenian publications available on the Internet an analysis of word geology early appearances in Slovene language is presented. First publication of the word root geol-appeared in newspaper Slovenija in year 1849. Among early authors Davorin Trstenjak was first using geological information starting in year 1853. Earliest longer text presented information on geological work in Slovene language was published in the newspaper Novice in year 1853. Based on the available literature and other sources reinterpretation of the meaning of word geology is based in the context of its role in the natural sciences development as well as its historical context. “…Specimen originally described by Mantell as Regnosaurus northamptoni, but which has since been determined as another specimen of Hylaeosaurus; it is still stored on one of the old-style Museum wooden display boards. the new order Dinosauria to accommodate them, for Mantell was equally well aware of all the taxa known at that time (Delair and Sarjeant (1975); Desmond (1979); Gardiner (1991)). Desmond argued convincingly that although it can be established that both Mantell and Buckland had significant roles in the discovery and interpretation of these giant land-dwelling fossil reptiles, it was the complex motivation of Richard Owen arising from his personal aspirations and behaviour, together with his competitive attitude to his scientific contemporaries which, allied to his scientific beliefs, resulted in the creation of that nomenclatorial landmark.…”

Through his early interest in fossils, Mantell participated in the geological exploration of the Weald and the Chalk Downs around Lewes. The material he accumulated contributed to the descriptive phase of British palaeontology and formed his notable museums at Lewes and Brighton, before its eventual acquisition by the British Museum. The nature of his collections, their significance and use in the interpretation of both vertebrate and invertebrate fossils and our knowledge of Cretaceous faunas, are discussed.

“…In the course of some research into Charles Darwin (Tee 1978), who was a friend of Babbage, I had noticed a letter Babbage wrote to Dr. Gideon Algernon Mantell (1792-1852), who first discovered dinosaurs (Delair and Sarjeant 1975 In the Auckland Public Library is a copy of Babbage's Calculating Engines (Babbage 1889), with a bookplate recording that it had been presented in 1896 by "Babbage Esq; New Zealand"-presumably by Charles Whitmore Babbage (1841Babbage ( -1923, eldest son of Benjamin Herschel Babbage (see Figure 9). I telephoned and wrote to several people named Babbage without getting any definite information.…”
