The White Mountain Apache Tribe Cultural Heritage Resource Best Management Practices (WMATCHRBMPs) present and delineate in guideline form cultural heritage resource definitions, management, and necessary steps before, during, and after project implementation for any ground-disturbing projects potentially adversely affecting cultural heritage resources on Ndee (Apache) trust lands. However, since the tribe’s adoption of the practices, the application of Ndee tenets found within the guidelines to real-world cultural and archaeological methods and practices remains scant. Embedded in the Ndee cultural tenets is the tenet of “respect,” which I will argue can be used as a tool by non- Ndee researchers to critically reflect on their own research agendas and to guide research projects with Ndee communities. By foregrounding respect within various ongoing archaeological project-related occurrences, contemporary Ndee experiences, defining Ndee material trait lists, superiority statements, archaeological categorizations, and stereotypical underpinnings, better paths forward for collaborative research with Ndee and other Native American communities can be highlighted.

In 2018, social anthropology finds itself increasingly concerned with its technical, legal and political conditions of possibility. The long‐term effects of austerity, financialisation and the technological transformation of media on teaching, research and publishing have led to intense struggles over the labour and property regimes underpinning the discipline. In responding to these challenges, anthropologists seem to be re‐conceptualising their own personhood and labour through the diverse conceptualisations of their interlocutors. However, it is also important to remember what makes social anthropology and its unique professional challenges but a small facet of a larger human condition. By way of conclusion, I offer kinship (the public's constitutive other) as one potential means of grappling with the limitations of social anthropology's own publicity.

RESUMEN:En el artículo analizo el desarrollo de la idea de conflicto ambiental ontológico con el objetivo de demostrar su autonomía conceptual y la necesidad de tratarla como una categoría propia en filosofía política y en derecho. Sitúo la formación del referido concepto dentro de los postulados teóricos de lo que se denomina giro ontológico (ontological turn) en antropología y filosofía política. Argumento que esta línea de la antropología contemporánea posee herramientas metodológicas y conceptuales que pueden ser muy útiles en el ámbito jurídico para tratar de conflictos relacionados con lo que se denomina diferencias inconmensurables (Povinelli). Sostengo que, en materia ambiental, muchos de los conflictos de intereses ocurren en un nivel profundo, sobre la realidad misma de la cosa objeto del conflicto, y que, por lo tanto, deben ser tratados como conflictos ontológicos (Blaser). Al final, procuro establecer criterios hermenéuticos aplicables a la gestión de esta clase de conflicto ambiental.
