The Eco-Scalar Fix: Rescaling Environmental Governance and the Politics of Ecological Boundaries in Alberta, Canada

Abstract: This paper engages with recent work in political ecology that explores the ways in which scale is imbricated in environmental governance. Specifically, we analyze the deployment of speciflc ecological scales as putatively 'natural' governance units in rescaling processes. To undertake this analysis, the paper brings two sets of literature into dialogue:(1) political ecology of scale and (2) political economy of rescaling, drawing on theories of uneven development. Building on this literature, we develop the co… Show more

“…Political ecologists have provided trenchant insights into the structures of power that shape relationships between nature, society, and technology (Birkenholtz, 2013;Heynen et al, 2006;Meehan, 2013b), and the scalar and geographic dimensions of environmental decision-making (Cohen and Bakker, 2013;Heynen, 2003;Lawhon and Patel, 2013). Extending these insights to approaches in industrial ecology, the field can provide important analyses to foster more sustainable and resilient futures.…”

“…The reconceptualizations of life associated with the molecular gaze (Franklin 2000;Keller 2000;Rose 2007) are also reshaping understandings of biodiversity and how to best "save" it (Takacs 1996). Geographers and political ecologists have recently highlighted the ways in which scientific knowledge shapes the scales and political debates of conservation management (Campbell 2007;Rangan and Kull 2009;Cohen and Bakker 2014). But the rich literature on genetics in critical geography focuses mainly on the politics of tracing human ancestry and the spread of diseases (Nash 2005(Nash , 2012(Nash , 2013Braun 2007;Livingstone 2010).…”
