a b s t r a c tIn the last few years an increasing attention has been paid to efficient energy construction systems in the building sector. Although in this contest extensive green roofs are reported to be very effective and sustainable systems, the fact that the main agents of this systems are living organisms have generated doubts, especially in locations where the development of plants and vegetation can be greatly affected by climate. This study aims to investigate the thermal performances of a 2000 m 2 particular proprietary extensive green roof system, located on the city of Lleida (Spain), classified as Dry Mediterranean Continental climate. First, plant cover and floristic composition analysis were carried out to evaluate the dynamic of the plant layer over the surface. Then, according to the result of the botanic analysis, summer and winter study in terms of spatial and temporal factors were conducted focussing on the substrate layer, evapotranspiration effect and comparing the different behaviour of the system in low (10%) and high (80%) plant cover conditions. In this extensive green roof, the results showed temporal and spatial changes in floristic composition, with a stable cover of Sedum sp between 20 and 40 %, and a peak of colonizing species in spring and early summer. The increase in vegetation cover appears to have few effects on the above nearby roof environment because of the low moisture level in the substrate layer so that the cooling effect provided by the evapotranspiration does not take place. In addition, the increased presence of vegetation canopy may induce a limitation in substrate night cooling whereas serves as good shield for solar radiation during the day. Finally, the study also reveals the importance of the spatial factor in extensive green roofs, which can lead to not negligible variations on the thermal performance, as well as the floristic composition.

Building-integrated greenery (BIG) systems, which include green roofs and green facades, are well-established nature-based solutions (NBS) with proven scientific benefits. However, initial costs and economic apprehensions stemming from potential negative outcomes act as adoption barriers. Furthermore, the lack of standardized indicators and assessment methodologies for evaluating the city-level impacts of BIG systems presents challenges for investors and policy makers. This paper addresses these issues by presenting a comprehensive set of indicators derived from widely accepted frameworks, such as the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) and the NBS impact evaluation handbook. These indicators contribute to the creation of a ‘sustainability factor’, which facilitates cost–benefit analyses for BIG projects using locally sourced data. The practical application of this factor to a 3500 m2 green roof in Lleida, Catalonia (Spain) demonstrates that allocating space for urban horticultural production (i.e., food production), CO2 capture, and creating new recreational areas produces benefits that outweigh the costs by a factor value of nine during the operational phase of the green roof. This cost–benefit analysis provides critical insights for investment decisions and public policies, especially considering the significant benefits at the city level associated with the implementation of BIG systems.

Se presentan los resultados preliminares de un estudio sobre modelo físico, referidos a la eficacia y eficiencia hidrológicas de cubiertas verdes para su utilización en el Área Metropolitana del Gran Resistencia (AMGR), Chaco. Las cubiertas verdes de tipo extensivas son sistemas que se colocan sobre techos tradicionales para disminuir los efectos de la impermeabilización del suelo urbano, buscando laminar los hidrogramas de escurrimiento que se generan. Están compuestas por varias capas construidas con distintos elementos, con características y propiedades diferentes, estando la capa superior constituida por un sustrato orgánico, de poco espesor, que permite el crecimiento de vegetación de bajo porte y por el que recibe el nombre de cubiertas verdes. El aumento de la impermeabilización asociada a la creciente urbanización, la baja pendiente natural del terreno y su localización en una zona de riesgo hídrico hacen propicia la implementación de este sistema en las ciudades que conforman el Área Metropolitana del Gran Resistencia como una medida de mitigación que permitiría minimizar los efectos de precipitaciones de elevada intensidad, reduciendo y retardando el agua de escurrimiento directo, colaborando a evitar (o por lo menos minimizar) los anegamientos provocados por las lluvias. En el presente trabajo se buscó evaluar cualitativa y cuantitativamente el efecto de este tipo de techos. Para ello, se construyó un modelo físico de la cubierta extensiva, utilizándose además otra de tipo plana tradicional como contraste. Los resultados preliminares obtenidos mostraron un notorio efecto amortiguador y retardador del escurrimiento de este tipo de cubiertas.
