“…Elsewhere, a typical lifespan of U . crassus in Bohemia is 10 years (Douda, ), and as short as 7 years in the Marmara region of Turkey (Ercan et al ., ). These estimates suggest a positive relationship between longevity and latitude for U .…”

“…A clear pattern can be seen in asymptotic growth of shell lengths at approximately 90, 70, and 50–100 mm for U . crassus populations in Marmara, Bohemia, and Bavaria, respectively (Hochwald, ; Douda, ; Ercan et al ., ). Compared with maximum estimates of age and size, the evaluation of biogeographical trends in growth rate is more difficult because many different numerical approaches have been used in the past to define U .…”

“…In studies on U. crassus, the maximum shell length was reported as 66.9 mm in the Wkra River (Poland) [31]), 67.4 mm in the Palakaria River (Bulgaria) [32], 81 mm in Bohemia (Czech Republic) [30], 83 mm in Estonia [9], 85.4 mm in the Vantaa River (Finland) [33], and 95 mm in the Susa River (Denmark) [34]. During this study, which was done in Çine Creek, the largest length was measured as 92.50 mm, while another study conducted in Sapanca Lake on the west coast of Turkey reported that U. crassus were found with lengths of 74 mm [35]. When all these studies are taken into consideration, it is seen that the mussel measured in Çine Creek has the longest length except for the Susa River.…”

“…Ercan et al [20] reported the freshwater mussel fauna of Turkey has hitherto received little attention. Five native mussel species belonging to 3 genera were encountered in surveys: Anodonta cygnea, A. anatina, Unio pictorum, U. crassus, and Dreissena polymorpha.…”
