The Economic Burden of Inappropriate Drug Prescribing, Lack of Adherence and Compliance, Adverse Drug Events in Older People

Abstract: Adverse drug events (ADEs) are an increasingly relevant issue for healthcare systems as they are associated with poorer health outcomes and avoidable misuse of resources. The rates of ADEs are higher in the elderly population, as many older patients have comorbidities, multiple drug prescriptions and deteriorated physical and cognitive functioning. The occurrence of ADEs can lead to a perceived lack of therapy efficacy and further underuse or suboptimal adherence in elderly people, with detrimental clinical ou… Show more

“…Age-related changes influence the pharmacokinetic pathways and the pharmacodynamic response of therapies delivered to the elderly population, increasing the risk for drug-related problems (DRP) which favor costly and frequent hospitalizations, and augmenting the mortality risk, irrespective of the environment of care [14]. The variability of the individual degree of functional independence is another significant aspect influencing therapeutic decisions that need to ensure functional independence and prolong social insertion [5].…”

“…At the individual level, the challenge is to balance problems related to drug use without denying older people potentially valuable drug therapy. At the societal level, the challenge is to minimize drug-related illness, hospitalizations and associated costs [1, 2]. …”
