The economic potential of some metacarbonate rocks in Akoko-Edo, Edo state Nigeria

Abstract: The application of metacarbonate rocks depend majorly on their physical and/or chemical properties. The mineralogical and chemical properties of the metacarbonate rocks from Enwan, Bekuma, and Ekpedo metacarbonate deposits in Akoko Edo, Nigeria were determined using combined modal petrographic analysis and XRS-FP quantitative analysis. The modal analyses show that the metacarbonate rocks from Enwan, Ekpedo and Bekuma contain averages of 96.4%, 58.5%, and 77.35% CaCO3 respectively and 3.6%, 41.5% and 13.1% MgO … Show more

“…Marble is a type of granular limestone or dolomite that has been recrystallized by heat, pressure, and aqueous solutions [1]. Marble is a coarse industrial rock element with a high carbonate content that varies in occurrence; it is widely used in the cement and paint industries [2]. Marble occurs in a wide range of geological environments, including mountain ranges, fault zones, and sedimentary basins [3].…”

“…According to Antosik et al, a mineral is a solid, naturally occurring chemical compound with a relatively well-defined chemical composition [1]. Nigeria is endowed with abundant mineral deposits that must be explored, extracted, and refined to serve the nation's economic requirements [2,3]. Due to its properties, gold is one of the most expensive commodities in the world [4].…”

“…Nigeria possesses enormous mineral reserves, encompassing oil, natural gas, coal, tin, limestone, and iron ore (Taiwo and Omotehinse, 2022). The nation's varied geology also sustains substantial sand formations, which are essential for the development of construction and infrastructure.…”
