The economics of altruism: The old, the rich, the female

Abstract: This study examines whether certain observed characteristics are associated people's altruistic feelings and behaviors. The paper utilizes a National Mental Health Survey that gathered questions about respondents' self-reported altruism along with their demographic, labor force, and income information. The empirical results reveal that (1) older people are more altruistic; (2) higher income people are more altruistic; and (3) women are more altruistic. The results are robust once the potential endogeneity prob… Show more

“…Allocations of DG in this study correlated positively with agreeableness (in line with Ben-Ner et al, 2004 ), and UG offers in the full sample were predicted by extraversion and neuroticism in interaction with sex, not unprecedented in previous literature (Ashton et al, 1998 ; Oda et al, 2014 ; Nakavachara, 2018 ), but these facts bear little relevance for costly signaling. However, the number of sexual partners in life was correlated to the MAOs in the UG: the higher the number, the higher was the MAO, as shown in Figure 2 .…”

“…In the current meta-analysis, we therefore probed the influence of socioeconomic resources (i.e., income and education). We also considered gender because of prior reports of greater altruism in females compared with males (Nakavachara, 2018).…”

“…The age of the patients ( Mdn = 66.00) did not significantly differ from controls, ( Mdn = 67.00), U = 628.50, z = 1.57, p = .12, r = .20, and the ratio of males to females was similar for patients and controls, χ 2 (1, 64) = .58, p = .45. Additional demographic characteristics such as education and income were variables of interest that have been shown to be associated with charitable giving (e.g., Nakavachara, 2018). Years of formal education were similar for patients ( Mdn = 15.50) and controls ( Mdn = 16.00), U = 647.59, z = 1.85, p = .07, r = .23.…”
