The Effect of 2 Injection Speeds on Local Anesthetic Discomfort During Inferior Alveolar Nerve Blocks

Abstract: This randomized double-blind crossover trial investigated the discomfort associated with 2 injection speeds, low (60 seconds) and slow (100 seconds), during inferior alveolar nerve block by using 1.8 mL of 2% lidocaine with 1 : 100,000 epinephrine. Three phases were considered: (a) mucosa perforation, (b) needle insertion, and (c) solution injection. Thirty-two healthy adult volunteers needing bilateral inferior alveolar nerve blocks at least 1 week apart were enrolled in the present study. The anesthetic proc… Show more

“…Similar results have been reported in different studies that do conclude females suffer from greater levels of pain. 23,24 Furthermore, in our study, there was no significant relation of pain scores with age. However, literature does suggest that young adults and paediatric patients tend to suffer from greater levels of pain.…”

“…In our study, similar to some previous studies, sodium thiosulfate was used to neutralize the effects of sodium hypochlorite remaining in the canal. 34,35 This was done to eliminate the antibacterial effects of sodium hypochlorite remaining in dentinal tubules, which could serve as a confounding factor. However, it is less commonly used in the clinical setting and has been disregarded in some studies.…”

“…Although vibration decreased the pain score during needle insertion and anesthetic injection in the current study, several factors can affect the severity of pain during anesthetic injection, including the type, amount, and speed of the anesthetic injection and the dental clinician's experience and expertise [45678910]. In addition to treatment-related factors, psychological variables such as fear and anxiety also affect pain severity.…”

“…Furthermore, some strategies have been proposed to decrease the level of pain experienced during the injection of an anesthetic agent, such as injecting the anesthetic agent slowly and warming or buffering the anesthetic agent. However, the results of studies regarding the efficacy of these strategies have been controversial [8910].…”
