The Effect of a Health Communication Campaign on Compliance with Mass Drug Administration for Schistosomiasis Control in Western Kenya—The SCORE Project

Abstract: Abstract. Compliance with mass drug administration (MDA) can be affected by rumors and mistrust about the drug. Communication campaigns are an effective way to influence attitudes and health behaviors in diverse public health contexts, but there is very little documentation about experiences using health communications in schistosomiasis control programs. A qualitative study was conducted with community health workers (CHWs) as informants to explore the effect of a health communication campaign on their experi… Show more

“…In addition to the higher than expected design effect, other limitations of our study included the lower than targeted coverage rates, especially among SAC in CWT arms during the first two years. Once we identified these shortfalls, we increased our training of community drug distributors as well as our communication efforts, 19,20 resulting in better coverage rates in the last 2 years. We were also not always able to recruit the desired sample size to measure infection, especially in the early years of the study and among first-year students as there were fewer potential participants of this age.…”

“…Despite urinary schistosomiasis and macroscopic haematuria being common among children in the community, very few had received treatment with praziquantel (4.5% in the previous two months), showing the lack of preventive chemotherapy use in the area [ 6 ]. Further studies of the knowledge and beliefs about the disease among community and health workers could help to guide future educational campaigns [ 22 , 23 ].…”

“…In response, health education campaigns were initiated prior to the second round of MDA in order to address local concerns and anxieties. CHWs brought target audience perspectives to managers before and after the campaign, creating a unique opportunity for community-based participatory research [ 13 ]. A similar study into factors associated with participation in schistosomiasis control programs in Uganda also observed that participant involvement was more likely if the respondent was knowledgeable about schistosomiasis transmission and prevention (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.85, 95% CI 1.22–2.81) and reported to have received health education from the health personnel (AOR 5.95, 95% CI 3.67–9.65) [ 14 ].…”
