The effect of a hindered amine light stabilizer on the aging behavior of moisture-curable polyurethane as a cultural relics consolidant

Abstract: This paper aims to study the effect of a hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS 770), on the aging behavior of moisture-curable polyurethane (MCPU). MCPU is specifically developed by ourselves for the reinforcement of fragile organic cultural relics in high-humidity environments, but its aging resistance is insufficient. To improve the aging resistance of MCPU, HALS 770 was used to prepare a modified MCPU (MMCPU). A colorimeter, an infrared spectrometer and a thermal analyzer were used to characterize the color… Show more

“…The side chain groups of POSS may also reduce t lecular mobility of the PU polymer [21,28], as well as reducing the rate of release tiles [21], both of which contribute to a lower rate of thermal decomposition of th mer. Based on the kinetics calculations of thermal decomposition [18], the decomposition activation energy was increased from 125.25 to 165.71 kJ•mol −1 with the addition of POSS. The energy barriers that need to be crossed for thermal decomposition are higher.…”

“…It is effective for the reinforcement of fragile organic objects but is susceptible to yellowing under UV light and heat conditions. In a previous study, we enhanced the yellowing resistance of the films under UV ageing by introducing hindered amine light stabilizers [18]. However, the issues of thermal stability and yellowing susceptibility to thermal ageing have not yet been addressed.…”

“…We can conclude that the addition of HALS 770 can protect the microcapsules from the damage of the UV light so it can extend the service life of the microcapsules. The mechanism for the stabilization of microcapsules may be explained as follows [42]: free alkoxyl radicals and free alkyl radicals are formed when the microcapsules are exposed to UV light. HALS 770 possesses alicyclic amines that can be transformed into regenerating free nitroxyl radicals.…”

“…Compared with traditional UV protection materials, polyurethane (PU) has the advantages of high elasticity and good biocompatibility . Due to the diversity of formulations and outstanding performance, PU has been widely used in various fields of industry and life, such as biomedicine, auto parts, sports equipment, films, pipes, etc. However, prolonged UV irradiation could cause yellowing, cracking, bubbling, and peeling of PU, shortening the service life of PU . Therefore, research on improving the UV resistance of PU is of great significance.…”
