The effect of a shoulder injury prevention programme on proprioception and dynamic stability of young volleyball players; a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Background The “FIFA 11 + Shoulder” programme has been reported to reduce the incidence of upper extremity injuries among soccer goalkeepers. It has also been recommended for overhead sports. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate the effect of an 8-week “FIFA 11 + shoulder” (11 + S) programme on shoulder joint position sense (JPS), threshold to detect passive motion (TTDPM) and upper quarter Y Balance Test in young male volleyball players. Methods… Show more

“…The GH joint was positioned at 90° abduction, 0° of rotation with 90° of elbow flexion. Internal rotation (IR) was evaluated, as it is often used to quantify shoulder JPS, [ 5 , 44 , 45 ] and is a reliable movement with the Biodex (ICC = 0.88) [ 34 ]. After determining the maximal (max) active range of motion (AROM) for IR, 75% and 90% of their max AROM was calculated for relative target angles (criterion positions).…”

“…After determining the maximal (max) active range of motion (AROM) for IR, 75% and 90% of their max AROM was calculated for relative target angles (criterion positions). Relative target angles were used to take into account each participant’s movement ranges, while representing the same stretching of the soft tissues, thus activating mechanoreceptors to the same degree for each participant [ 45 ]. Before testing, the system was calibrated according to the manufacturer’s guidelines [ 40 ].…”

“…Repetitive high demand in throwing activities such as spiking and services put extra pressure on the shoulder joint of the volleyball players. Moreover, it's unfortunate that the ability to do these movements effortlessly requires high synchronization in muscle nearby the shoulder (Zarei et al, 2021). Research further shows that volleyball-precise abilities such as serving and spiking and place put great load on the shoulder girdle.…”

“…Additionally, individuals with NSCLBP exhibit compromised proprioception compared to their healthy counterparts [ 6 ]. Given the crucial role of proprioception in joint stability, movement control, and injury prevention [ 7 , 8 ], its impairment in LBP patients can have profound implications, such as delayed muscle reflexes and increased vulnerability to spinal injuries [ 9 , 10 ]. This situation escalates the risk of recurrence and intensifies pain and disability, thus highlighting the importance of proprioceptive training in LBP management [ 11 , 12 ].…”
